Kristin (vis.social Admin)<p>Sometimes, updating a Data Art piece is just too much of an emotional drain. And the piece must remain out of date. </p><p>But to be honest, that's part of the piece itself. </p><p>How Big is 400,000? <a href="https://kristinhenry.github.io/howBig/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">kristinhenry.github.io/howBig/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>I wrote a bit about the piece: <a href="https://kristinhenry.medium.com/how-big-is-400-000-922841dbc986" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">kristinhenry.medium.com/how-bi</span><span class="invisible">g-is-400-000-922841dbc986</span></a></p><p><a href="https://vis.social/tags/DataArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataArt</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/DataViz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataViz</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/CreativeCoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreativeCoding</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/SciArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SciArt</span></a></p>

Nundrum<p>I released something today that needs a bit of beta testing.</p><p><a href="https://github.com/robbieh/XScreenBane/tree/dev" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/robbieh/XScreenBane</span><span class="invisible">/tree/dev</span></a></p><p>It's a <a href="https://theatl.social/tags/Clojure" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Clojure</span></a> based companion to XScreenSaver that enables writing hacks in Clojure with <a href="https://theatl.social/tags/Clojure2D" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Clojure2D</span></a> or AWT. Should work well on Linux and partially work on Macs. I just don't have one to test with so I can't say for sure.</p><p>This comes with three hacks that I wrote, including one older project that I re-purposed to fit into this one.</p><p>My goal was to make a platform for <a href="https://theatl.social/tags/genart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genart</span></a> and <a href="https://theatl.social/tags/dataart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dataart</span></a> - and very specifically I wanted to explore using external data sources for influencing the output. The grid screenshot shows "dirty pages" in the page buffer. The swirl shows the status of TCP connections. And the glyphs represent MAC addresses.</p><p>Wish I was fast enough to do an "Advent of Hacks" and pump out a new one each day!</p>
Kristin (vis.social Admin)<p>I'm wanting to distract myself from current events, and somehow this animation of garbage pickups in nyc seemed both distracting from and relevant to current events. Got a proof-of-concept version working back in the summer and then left it to simmer while dealing with the crazy period leading into October.</p><p>Took a detour to learn <a href="https://theatl.social/tags/Specter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Specter</span></a> along the way, which will be helpful for managing the data part of data-art. </p><p>The first image is a view of open ports on my system. Each arc is a port. They swirl around the middle as long as they're open. Still playing with mapping the port info to features in the display.</p><p>The second is just playing with gradients. Haven't figured out any data to map to it yet.</p><p>The biggest hurdle before a release is figuring out color palettes. How do I semantically map colors to features?</p>

Kristin Henry<p>So, a few years ago, when I was offered a commission to create an art installation created with data about grief...my mind went right to the koi pond.</p><p>In my 'Data Meditations: an Abstract Koi Pond'. Yes, I created a fish for my grandmother.</p><p>About two years ago, I added a fish for my mom.</p><p><a href="https://artatomic.itch.io/data-meditations-an-abstract-koi-pond" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">artatomic.itch.io/data-meditat</span><span class="invisible">ions-an-abstract-koi-pond</span></a></p><p><a href="https://foody.social/tags/dataArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dataArt</span></a> <a href="https://foody.social/tags/animation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>animation</span></a> <a href="https://foody.social/tags/data" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>data</span></a> <a href="https://foody.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a> <a href="https://foody.social/tags/grief" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>grief</span></a> <a href="https://foody.social/tags/CreativeCoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreativeCoding</span></a> <a href="https://foody.social/tags/datavis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>datavis</span></a></p>

Kristin (vis.social Admin)<p>It's been long enough since I worked on this piece, that it should be fine to share the resulting video now.</p><p>Usually, when working on a data viz, the goal is to reveal patterns. But in this project, the goal was to reveal the chaos.</p><p>I'll be posting it for my supporters on Patreon, on Monday.</p><p><a href="https://vis.social/tags/dataviz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dataviz</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/dataviz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dataviz</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/mapping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mapping</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/DataArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataArt</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/CreativeCoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreativeCoding</span></a></p>
