mk30<p>awww al jazeera did a video segment about devon ave., in chicago, which is the neighborhood where my family lived in when we first moved to the US: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PImusg70HxM" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">youtube.com/watch?v=PImusg70HxM</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>one of the reasons why we lived there is because FREE ("friends of refugees from eastern european" <a href="https://www.friendsofrefugees.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">friendsofrefugees.org/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>) was located there. the organization was founded in the 60s by lubavitch chabad jews in chicago who wanted to "save the jews of russia". i guess we were some of those jews! there are a lot of jewish temples in the neighborhood, and i remember being a kid and walking by them, seeing their big banners with pathetic-looking kids, saying "help russian jews!" or something like that...and at some point it dawned on me that they were talking about me and my family! but we weren't like those sad-faced kids in the pictures. and i think that experience helped me later decide that NO ONE is like the "wretches" portrayed in charity ads. we're all people.</p><p> i loved being a kid growing up on devon...i never felt like a weirdo for being an immigrant, kids played on our street, i had a best friend on my block, there was a huge park that we could walk to (warren park), and when i went with my mom on devon proper (it's like the high street of the neighborhood), i loved all the lights and beautiful saris and other interesting things in the window displays.</p><p>it's not the most visually beautiful place - it is just a neighborhood in chicago, after all - but i have very fond memories of it from when i was a kid...</p><p>anyway, we lived there for a few years before my parents made $ and moved us to the burbs (following the standard desired upward mobility route). when we moved to the burbs, i remember feeling lonely because everyone just stayed in their own house or their own yard, and even though there were kids on our block, everyone just mostly stuck to their own house. so, very early on, i got an education in the different ways that urban/suburban planning can lead to different social outcomes.</p><p>back then we didn't have the $ to try any of the amazing south asian restaurants, but now we do and i have had some very tasty food at restaurants there.</p><p>anyway, i know that for my parents, those early years in america were filled with a lot of hardship, but they mostly shielded me from it, and i remember the years on devon fondly.</p><p><a href="https://tilde.zone/tags/chicago" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chicago</span></a> <a href="https://tilde.zone/tags/immigrants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>immigrants</span></a> <a href="https://tilde.zone/tags/UrbanPlanning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UrbanPlanning</span></a> <a href="https://tilde.zone/tags/CulturalStudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CulturalStudies</span></a></p>
