This Is My Glasgow<p>One of the first canals in Scotland, it was abandoned for navigation in 1952. It was covered over when the M8 motorway was built in the 1960s, and which partially follows the route of the old canal. Bobbing Boat<p>In the olden, golden days of yore, when horses pulled boats along the canals, speed was of the essence.</p><p>The faster you could go, the sooner you could get your next load, the more money you could earn.</p><p>Wherever there was a bridge the horse couldn't go under, it would have to be unhitched, walked around, and rehitched – time consuming!<br>Any small bridges had a slot for the tow rope to pass through. Bobbing Boat<p>Just passed through a lock full of large, floating branches—the size that sticks (pun) in lock paddles and prevents them from closing, so the lock leaks and cannot refill (serious issue).</p><p>Five minutes with a pole and hook cleared the lock chamber. Bobbing Boat<p>Spring evenings can be chilly. To warm the boat, a cast-iron stove burns briquettes, scooped in from the bucket at left and arranged using tongs.</p><p>Ashes fall through a grate into a drawer that gets emptied into an ash bucket.</p><p>On top, a fan gently pushes heat through the space. I followed an old railway track (turned into a gravel road) for a bit and then crossed Swedens longest canal and rode along the shoreline for a bit. It's "probably by Thomas Telford" - the great civil engineer - and dates from 1820.
