Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>I took a stab at cleaning up my code for BearExporter, a Python script to export all of your Bear notes to Markdown files you can use with Obsidian, read in the terminal, or whatever.</p><p>As the old saying goes "it works for me!" but I know it's not exactly great code, but it is available.</p><p>I'm not great at Python but I'll try to improve it as time allows.</p><p>➡️ <a href="https://codeberg.org/raster/BearExporter" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">codeberg.org/raster/BearExport</span><span class="invisible">er</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BearApp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BearApp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BearNotes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BearNotes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BearNotesApp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BearNotesApp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/macOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macOS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>python</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/markdown" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>markdown</span></a></p>
Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>I wrote up a quick post on how to edit a theme for Bear (and then discovered other theme hackers as well!)</p><p>➡️ <a href="https://rasterweb.net/raster/2025/03/17/editing-a-bear-theme/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">rasterweb.net/raster/2025/03/1</span><span class="invisible">7/editing-a-bear-theme/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearapp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearnotes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearnotes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearnotesapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearnotesapp</span></a></p>
Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>Yes to Obsidian... I copied the exported Markdown files from Bear to a folder on the Linux laptop and can open &amp; use all the notes just fine.</p><p>So the next idea would be to automate the process by scheduling the Mac to export all the files and move them to a volume that Obsidian can use as a vault.</p><p>The whole idea here being I can use Bear, but still access my notes while using Linux.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearapp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/obsidian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>obsidian</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/notes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>notes</span></a></p>
Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>So right now the Python script grabs the text of a note, creates a file with the title as the name (needs work) and then sets the date created &amp; modified time of the file.</p><p>So on disk are Markdown files with all my Bear notes. This makes them available as plain text files in the terminal, on Linux, heck...probably in Obsidian as well?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearapp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/data" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>data</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/backup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>backup</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>python</span></a></p>
Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>I found a Python script somebody wrote to export Bear's notes from the sqlite db they are stored in and it's not exactly what I need so I ended up writing about 25 lines of my own Python code that does what I need.</p><p>It is... rough, but it works! I need to add a few things, like cleaning titles for filename, etc. (The script I found had issues of its own, so...)</p><p>I welcome these little challenges to learn more Python though.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearapp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/data" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>data</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/backup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>backup</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>python</span></a></p>
Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>Some "notes" (LOL) about my first week with Anytype, how I see using it, and why I probably won't put all my notes there...</p><p>➡️ <a href="https://rasterweb.net/raster/2025/03/09/anytype-an-everything-app/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">rasterweb.net/raster/2025/03/0</span><span class="invisible">9/anytype-an-everything-app/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/anytype" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anytype</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/notion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>notion</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/notes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>notes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearapp</span></a></p>
Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>I've really come to love Bear and how it works, but with no easy way to get to those notes on Linux I may just end up with a combo of Bear and Anytype. </p><p>(I moved to Bear years ago when I dumped Evernote.)</p><p>I also didn't find a good way to use Obsidian across macOS, iOS, and Linux.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearapp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/anytype" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anytype</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/obsidian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>obsidian</span></a></p>
Pete Prodoehl 🍕<p>I've been using Anytype for a few days now. There are things I really like about it (and the org) and I'll probably use it in my workflow (and it will replace Notion) but I'm not sure it'll work for as a general notebook for me.</p><p>I really prefer a big blank text area like Bear or Obsidian uses, with really good markdown support. I've not been able to get that smoothly in Anytype yet.</p><p>The "everything is an object" just seems more database driven in how it works.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/anytype" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anytype</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bearapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bearapp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/obsidian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>obsidian</span></a></p>

Ironically I resisted obsidian because I struggled with the concept of managing folders. 🫠 Tagging lots so that more people can learn about this great tool. The Bear, Obsidian and universal markdown compatibility options are chef's kiss. 😎</p>
Stefan :veritrek:<p>Back to <a href="https://social.stefanberger.net/tags/Obsidian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Obsidian</span></a> rocking the „Tokyo Night“ theme 😍</p><p>My <a href="https://social.stefanberger.net/tags/BearApp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BearApp</span></a> subscription was already canceled a while ago. </p><p>The final push today was watching a video of <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://pkm.social/@nickmilo" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>nickmilo</span></a></span> by accident scrolling through recommendations.</p><p>I was an Obsidian user some time ago for many years and switched because I didn't like the iOS app. But watching the video made it more clear/present again to me, that owning your notes is a fundamental advantage.
