TIL: an exhausted #cmos #battery can cause #Linux to behave strangely after a hard #shutdown (caused by a #UPS being incorrectly turned off) - it uses the BIOS time to check the filesystem block timestamps, and as it had gone back to 2012 the OS thinks the filesystem time is in the future! (At least the hard drive on this server isn't on the way out yet which is what I had feared, but this required an emergency visit to the office as it is the main #VOIP #PBX) #sysadmin

Hello everyone. How does the battery consumption under GrapheneOS look like for you? Is it higher than with stock Android (google) or less or lower?
A new report confirms that Australia’s transition to #wind, #solar, and #battery storage has protected households and businesses from even higher power bills. This directly debunks #PeterDutton repeated claim that #renewables are driving up electricity prices. #RenewableEnergy #AusPol
New green battery tech - from red state Alabama
Doesn't require cooling, a big downside of lithium ion batteries.
Also cheaper to produce.
From inventor of Super Soaker.
He's also Tuskegee Institute engineer involved with stealth bomber, bunch of other stuff.
Cannot make this stuff up!

New NSW laws to regulate e-bike batteries after hundreds of fires and multiple deaths
Fire and Rescue NSW say 384 lithium-ion battery incidents since 2024 caused at least 33 injuries
This needs to go nationwide
Interesting, a sodium-ion portable power bank comes to market,
Elecom’s Na Plus power bank doesn’t use lithium and can be recharged nearly 5,000 times.

How to Limit Charging Level in Linux (and Prolong Battery Life)
Our PV+battery has been up about little over a week now. Today was hot and sunny; the first day of a 4-day heatwave and topped out at 31C while staying pretty humid.
We had AC on in a couple of rooms most of the day, using 26kWh of energy for all activity. The PV array produced nearly 44kWh of energy. We consumed 16kWh from the battery. At about 4:00pm, the battery was full.
Presently, the battery is discharging as we consume electricity from it, and it exports to the grid. Over the day, and across two price spikes we've exported 23kWh of energy. It's clearly not going to be any less in coming days.
On less sunny and hot days, it looks like we'll generate around 2x our consumption. On hot days like this, it will be even more (
Yes, it's going to take a handful of years to recover the outlay, but at this rate, we’ll both completely offset the cost of electricity supply to our house as well as earn enough FiT to offset a significant proportion of electricity supply for our guest cottages.
In NSW (and I believe other states), there are significant state government rebates on batteries alongside federal rebates on PVs. If you have the chance to invest in solar+battery, now is as good a time as any.
So today is not going entirely to plan.
The set of additional #solarpanels I connected up refuse to give us juice. I tried to trace the fault and got jack shit info because my cheap ass 19 year old #multimeter is (confirmed by many tests now) not working any more. Its fuse is fine too, as is its #battery. It just displays zeros.
So add to the list of unexpected expenses and delays one new multimeter...
#mutualaid is our lifeline to #selfsufficiency so we can help others. Can you help us out with our expenses for...?
Multimeter: $7-8 at Harbor Freight
Crimp connectors: $?
Tyres: ~$1200 (Vulpibus)
Refilling fuel: ~$100
Refilling my overdraft: ~$500
Refilling my other overdraft: ~$250
I'm super excited by products like the just-announced Pila Battery. It's filling a big gap in the home energy space: an affordable, modular, battery system that you can easily take with you no matter where you live. Rent or own your home ... it's got you covered. I'm really excited to see how this shapes up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhCoY2ZYjhs #energy #battery
Just to be safe, I put it in the thicker chassis for now. The connector was a bit tricky, so I had to place some foam underneath. I also got an extra flex cable (the molds are slightly different) and a connector socket—let's see how that works out. Maybe this new flex will also fix the left-right balance issue specific to the flex itself.
The Flow Battery Research Collective (FBRC) are building an open source battery. Technology writer Koen Vervloesem did a nice write-up about their #FOSDEM talk in the Energy devroom. FBRC works on redox flow batteries which are better suited for long-term, stationary storage and less hazardous than Li-ion batteries. FBRC plan to democratize flow battery technology by developing an open source flow battery, starting with a development kit.
