Today in Labor History January 4, 1976: A wave of wildcat strikes began on this date in Spain, involving over 500,000 workers. During January 1976, some six thousand workers initiated a strike against the decree to limit wage increases and for better working conditions. Two months later they called for the third general strike of the year. That same day, armed police entered the Church of San Francisco in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where the workers were gathering. A few seconds later, they deployed tear gas inside the church, beating up and shooting workers as they fled. Police killed five in the massacre and injured over 130.
