And discovered the difference between a lifetime California car (the 530i) and one that's spent good chunks of its life in places like Massachusetts and Seattle (the wagon).</p><p>Was planning to remove the exhaust, but couldn't even get started; the four nuts that attach the exhaust to the manifold studs are super rusty. (Second ZF I've had my nose in this week—does that qualify me for some kind of certification?)</p><p>I did use the tool my dad and I made, but not the way I expected to; I used them to support all of the stacked assemblies while I lifted the transmission case up and over them. Hey, it was kind of dumb, but it worked! Nathan Avots-Smith<p>Wrenching today turned into a good news/bad news situation. Good news: I'm getting my money's worth out of my QuickJacks. Better news: I fixed my transmission! Replaced the solenoids, filter, and fluid, plus the plastic bits circled in the photo, which are a common failure point. These were almost certainly original, meaning 16 years and 226K miles old. Yikes!</p><p>Bad news: the water pump crapped the bed half a mile into my test drive. David Wilkins<p>When BMW walked away from the rump MG Rover in 2000, it sold Land Rover to Ford and kept the new Mini and mid-range R30 project for itself. That left MG Rover without a replacement for the 25 and 45. One interim solution was to offer sporty MG versions of the 25 and 45 (here the 25-based MG ZR), a move that was surprisingly effective in giving those cars fresh appeal at little cost. David Wilkins<p>Yesterday Rover R30, today BMW E87. What’s the link? Well the first-generation 1-Series certainly isn’t just an R30 with a BMW badge - it’s rear-wheel drive rather than FWD and it shares a lot with the E90 3-Series. But there is a persistent industry rumour that much of E87 from the windscreen backwards is borrowed from the unrealised R30. As far as I know this has never been confirmed but does seem at least plausible to me. David Wilkins<p>It should have been out on the road. Instead, it lives in a glass case in a museum - the British Motor Museum, to be precise. This is R30. More specifically, it’s a 1/4 scale model of an early iteration of the car that was meant to replace Rover’s 25 and 45. Apparently a production-ready prototype existed by 2000 but after BMW abandoned MG Rover, the R30 never saw the light of day. That may not quite be the end of the story, though. David Wilkins<p>By 1999, Rover had spent five years under BMW ownership, and the first major new product to result from the German parent’s investment arrived in the form of the Rover 75. The aging 200 and 400 were given 75-style facelifts and renamed the 25 and 45. But it was widely known that these models from Rover’s Honda era were to be replaced by a new BMW-funded model family, R30. More on that tomorrow. Sand im Getriebe<p>𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐳𝐮𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐯𝐨𝐦 𝟐𝟓.𝟎𝟗.𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒</p><p>Wie so oft, hat das Amtsgericht das Urteil gesprochen, das wahrscheinlich schon vor der Verhandlung feststand und es schlecht begründet (er ist ja Aktivist, also schuldig, Geldstrafe über 750 €). Dagegen sind wir natürlich in Berufug gegangen, in der Hoffnung, dass sich das Landgericht ein bisschen mit der Sach- und Rechtslage befasst und z.B. die Frage klärt, ob nicht ein rechtfertigender Notstand vorliegt, da die <a href="https://climatejustice.global/tags/noIAA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>noIAA</span></a> mit einem Millionenbudget den Menschen vorgaugelt, dass eine motorisierte Individualmobilität für alle möglich sei.</p><p>Inzwischen hat <a href="https://climatejustice.global/tags/Volkswagen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Volkswagen</span></a> mit der Staatsanwaltschaft vereinbart, dass sie den Angeschuldigten in Ruhe lassen würden, wenn er 250 € gemeinnützig spendet und 210 € an VW zahlt. Natürlich kommt es für uns nicht in Frage uns an der Dividendenkrise von Volkswagen zu beteiligen und auf die 22 Milliarden Gewinnausschüttung noch ein Trinkgeld draufzulegen, während Löhne gekürzt werden (anstatt durch die Umstellung auf Straßenbahnproduktion die Zukunft der Arbeiter:innen zu sichern).</p><p>Auch die Richterin fand es unangemessen, nachdem inzwischen aufgeflogen war, dass der Schaden nicht wie von VW behauptet 4000 € ist, sondern dem nicht feststellbaren Gegenwert von 2 Heißklebesticks und 100ml Schleifpaste entspricht.</p><p>Daher hat das Gericht nun entschieden, dass das Verfahren eingestellt wird, wenn 460 EUR an die Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald gespendet wird. Fast genau diese Summe hat unser Online-Crowfunding ergeben! Die weitere Unterstützung, die noch in bar oder über steadyHQ eingegangen sind, können wir nun für die Rechnung der Anwältin verwenden und, falls wir das auch gefördert bekommen, für Repressionskosten der Menschen, die 2021 die IAA-Anfahrt durch eine Autobahnabseilaktion blockiert hatten.</p><p>Zwar wäre es schön gewesen, noch ein Vernetzungstreffen am Gericht zu haben, in einer unterhaltsamen Gerichtsshow die Folgen der IAA zu beleuchten, einen Freispruch zu erzielen und das Geld lieber direkt in Verhinderung von Waldrodungen z.B. für die <a href="https://climatejustice.global/tags/BMW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BMW</span></a> -Autobahn zu investieren, aber wir haben uns entschlossen unsere Kapazitäten lieber für andere Wirkungsbereiche – oder unumgängliche Verfahren anderer Aktivisty einzusetzen.</p><p>Wer mehr Details mag, kann sich gerne bei uns melden.
