Cette impossibilité de voir l’inceste comme une pratique sexuelle criminelle, a été montrée de façon remarquable dans une étude ethnographique réalisée par Léonore Le Caisne au sein du village de province où s’est passée l’affaire Lydia Guardo."Alors que la presse évoque le calvaire de Lydia, et décrit le père incestueux comme « l’ogre de Meaux », l’éthologue relate la consternation d’un village « qui savait mais n’a rien fait ». La famille Guardo est perçue par les villageois comme tout à fait ordinaire, une famille comme une autre, un père travailleur, respecté et considéré avec bienveillance, bien qu’il ne se cachait pas de sa paternité auprès des habitants, commerçants et institutions. Les grossesses n’avaient suscité aucun scandale. Pour les habitants du village, lié par le commérage, l’inceste relève d’une banale problématique de la procréation entre un homme et sa fille « il faisait des enfants à sa fille ». Ils ne perçoivent pas alors les rapports asymétriques de parenté et d’âge que constitue cet inceste paternel : derrière le commérage, la pratique criminelle de l’inceste est passée sous silence. L’affaire est étonnante et illustre notre difficulté à percevoir l’inceste dans toute sa complexité.
