Today a couple approached me while I was finishing taking 360° photos for to ask if I was doing cartography. They were surprised to learn than I was not being paid! We talked for several minutes about OSM, and they asked a lot of questions about where to access it and what apps to use. I showed them @organicmaps and how they could use it to find details like water fountains and bike parking, which aren't present in Google Maps. They were so excited!

This is why I do the work. 🙂

They also complimented my French and my accent, which is always super gratifying as a second language speaker.

@uneabeille What app do you use for 360 photos? Do the photos go to OSM or another site? I would love to add 360 photos to places.

@jessienab I use Mapillary, because it was where all the other locals had their pictures. The images can be made to show up in iD editor!

@uneabeille @organicmaps interesting , could you write a short post about what you’re doing, and how?

@uneabeille @organicmaps Encroyable! Great work in promoting OSM 👍 Used it (again) today for a half hour drive and only realised about an hour later my mobile data wasn't actually turned on. My Organic maps app had my journey local, with zero issues getting where I needed to. Pretty sure Google/Apple maps don't work offline. Ne pas s’arrêter 😊

@healthiswealth
In the interests of dispelling misinformation, Google Maps and Apple Maps can work offline using downloaded maps.

@snaprails @healthiswealth
But you can only ask offline google, the road from a to b for cars.
No foot or bike paths.

@healthiswealth @uneabeille @organicmaps It's a lot easier to use interface for offline use. Especially when you are most likely to be offline when you need a map. There are slight map changes I'd make for use in PA to make state secondary roads look different than township roads.

@bertol @uneabeille @organicmaps Yes, mee too, and for more deep dive edits: "every door"

@uneabeille @underdarkGIS @organicmaps Reading this just as I wrap up mapping 🪑 benches in my area (which the city of :wien: Vienna refused to provide as #OpenData) for today on #OpenStreetMap made me happy 😀
