🚀 After 18 years on Ubuntu, we've upgraded the @openstreetmap servers to Debian 12 (Bookworm). 🌍 openstreetmap.org/ is now faster using Ruby 3.1. Onward to new mapping adventures! Thank you to the team for the smooth transition. 🤓

Any rationale to share behind the upgrade?

@osm_tech @JoeP "Ubuntu 20.04 has recently moved away from the established 5 years of maintenance updates and now requires a paid Ubuntu Pro plan (<= 5 systems are free) to receive some package security updates"

Hmm this is not accurate. All security updates that were previously provided free for 5 years on LTSes continue to be free; Ubuntu Pro only enables access to additional security updates that were not previously being provided.

@falken @osm_tech @JoeP sorry, where is this? This sounds like either a bug or a misunderstanding.

The Canonical Security Team did not previously commit effort to develop security updates for packages in universe, regardless of whether the release was 5 months old or 4 years old.

@osm_tech

Congratulations on the successful upgrade to Debian 12. We are glad that #debianLTS project also helped in making this choice.

@osm_tech @openstreetmap I appreciate that this migration is characterized as an upgrade. Well done, OSM.

The arc of distribution usefulness is long, but it bends towards Debian.
