New map app recommendation: Organic Maps - organicmaps.app/ - Available for Android and iOS. It is a privacy preserving Maps.Me fork providing users with beautiful vector tiles for offline maps and navigation. This is my favourite way for using #OpenStreetMap on a smartphone!

We are happy that our FOSS report recommendation has been heard and accepted - @openstreetmap got it's own @nextcloud instance: osmfiles.cloud68.co - ping us if you need an account.

#Mapbox has done great work developing Open Source standards and tools for map vector tiles! Some months ago, they decided to change the license for further development of the related JavaScript library, but fortunately the community took over and just released an official version 1.14.0 of #maplibre-gl-js github.com/maplibre/maplibre-g

Interesting report on the use of Free and Open Source Software by the Foundation : openstreetmap.org/user/xamanu/.

And to @rory for leading the pack on with the -oriented en.osm.town instance!

What hosted or self-hosted alternatives would you suggest they use ?

The Foundation is running a survey (in 13 languages!) to find out more about the community. It should only take a few minutes, and we'd greatly appreciate as many responses as possible., 🙂 (pls boost)

We wrote a report on an inventory and recommendations about the use of Free and Open Source Software in the OpenStreetMap Foundation - openstreetmap.org/user/xamanu/

You can now join the Foundation as a voting member under the new Active Contributor Program, provided you achieve significant contribution, like 42 days of mapping over the last year or some other forms of contribution to the community (like organizing events, building software, etc.).

Twitter blocks us for promoting Free Software alternatives. A good example why tech monopolies are dangerous.

Check out the @openstreetmap Free and Open Source Software policy to guide, but not mandate, software choices for work within the OpenStreetMap Foundation: wiki.osmfoundation.org/wiki/FO

We need your help to make @openstreetmap more Free and Open Source! Join the OSMF FOSS policy committee and help us to identify our tools and support the community to be open.

Connect on IRC (-foss@oftc.net) or write us to foss@osmfoundation.org

Everybody is welcome!
