Time for #fridaygeotrivia
Name capital city pairs (and their countries) that are less than 100km by land (no tiny islands) from each other. For example Vienna, Austria and Bratislava, Slovakia
As always:
• Only one answer per toot
• You must include the hashtag #fridaygeotrivia and the emoji flag of relevant countries
Full rules/details: https://blog.opencagedata.com/post/geotrivia-september-2024
First #fridaygeotrivia points of the game go to @ryankas for Vatican City - Rome Italy
Next to score is #fridaygeotrivia newcomer @seav with Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo — Kinshasa, DRC
It was only a matter of time. Many-time #fridaygeotrivia winner @ccferrie picks up Pristina, Kosovo — Skopje, North Macedonia
barely beating out @seav
Ruling: @ryankas tries Helsinki, Finland - Tallinn, Estonia but we can't give the point as it requires a multi-hour ferry and thus doesn't pass the by land test
Point! to @ccferrie for the clever Jerusalem, Israel - Jerusalem, Palestine
Half point to @MichelvanBaal for Nicosia, Cyprus and North Nicosia, Northern Cyprus (which has no ISO code, and thus no emoji flag)
Anyone with any new answers? Otherwise we will call it in 5 minutes.
In a final #fridaygeotrivia throw of the dice @ccferrie tries Chisinau, Moldova - Tiraspol, Transnistria.
We can give only a half point as Transnistria does not have an ISO code
ok, the September 2024 edition of #fridaygeotrivia is over!
The coveted emoji trophy goes to ...
2nd place to @ccferrie
Thanks everyone for playing, see you next month!
Update: a late entry by @ryankas who writes
"Zagreb Croatia, Lubjania, Slovenia.
- while the city centers are 118 km apart, it looks like you can find points within the city limits of each that are less than 100 km apart - e.g. city borders <100km"
We will count it, thus cementing the victory
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Vatican City / Holy See, Vatican City - Rome Italy
Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo — Kinshasa, DRC
(does "by land" include ferries across the Congo?)
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Buda, Hungary, Pest, Hungary
@ryankas Wut? stop with the nonsense. must be DIFFERENT countries
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Zagreb Croatia, Lubjania, Slovenia.
- while the city centers are 118 km apart, it looks like you can find points within the city limits of each that are less than 100 km apart - e.g. city borders <100km
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Amsterdam, Netherlands, The Hague, Netherlands
@ryankas No, must be different countries
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Jerusalem, Palestine, Ammon, Jorden
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Damascus, Syria, Lebanon, Beirut
@ryankas yes! but already discovered
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Jerusalem, Israel, Amman Jordan
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Helsinki Finland, Tallinn, Estonia
@opencage or doesn't pass the by land test?
Jerusalem, Israel / Palestine
— Amman, Jordan
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Damascus, Syria – Beirut, Lebanon
@opencage Damas — Beyrouth
#fridaygeotrivia
@mckbrmn yes, but already taken!
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Jerusalem, Israel – Amman, Jordan
@opencage Skopje - Pristina
#Fridaygeotrivia
Pristina, Kosovo — Skopje, North Macedonia
@opencage Jerusalem - Jerusalem
#fridaygeotrivia
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Skopje - Pristina
@tml yes! but already discovered
@opencage does Nicosia / Nord-Nicosia count?
#fridaygeotrivia. Probably not as there is no emoij flag
@MichelvanBaal We will give a half point - our definition of country is it must have an ISO code, and Northern Cyprus does not.
@opencage @MichelvanBaal Strongly disagree. That would exclude e.g. Tibet. In this case that would not matter as Lhasa is >100km fomr the border, but as a matter of principle.
@alzimon @MichelvanBaal Correct, we exclude Tibet. Not a country as no ISO code (we do make an exception for Kosovo though, which also does not have an ISO code).
See the "How to play" section with the rules:
https://blog.opencagedata.com/post/geotrivia-september-2024
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Den Haag - Amsterdam
@tml No, must be different countries
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Jerusalem - Ramallah
@tml No Ramallah is "just" admin center, not capital
@tml @opencage #fridaygeotrivia Ramallah, Palestine, Amann, Jordan
@tml @opencage #fridaygeotrivia Jerusalem Israel - Ramallah Palestine
(in case OpenCage doesn't give Tor points because he didn't include the countries...)
@opencage Chisinau - Tiraspol (Transnistria) #fridaygeotrivia (clutching at straws here!)
@opencage Phnom-Penh and Saigon (Ho Chi Min city)
#fridaygeotrivia (the rules don’t specify when the city was a capital!)
@opencage challenging this rule should give a wealth of new options
@MichelvanBaal very clever, you get a point, but we immediately deduct 0.9 points for lawyering.
@MichelvanBaal Also, wrong emoji for Vietnam, if you are claiming Saigon as capital.
We thus have to revoke the remaining 0.1 point. #sorrynotsorry
@opencage I’ll meet you next week for a rematch!
@MichelvanBaal next month. We only play once per month. You can quiz yourself on past questions: https://blog.opencagedata.com/tagged/fridaygeotrivia
@MichelvanBaal @opencage Cunning! (Starts digging into German ministates of the 17th century, and falls foul of the ISO rule).
@opencage #fridaygeotrivia Vienna Bratislava
