In summary without being squeaky clean #openstreetmap would have been a non-starter.
@amapanda You might want to tell this to the American OSM editors who make edits based on what they see on state transportation road maps. Those are actually copyrighted as unlike documents provided by the federal government, state government documents aren't automatically released into the public domain.
And of course this doesn't get into those who make edits based on private sources like the Rand McNally Road Atlas.
