You may see some people on the Fediverse use Twitter-style verification symbols such as :verified: next to their names.

These are NOT verfied users, it's just a custom emoji which anyone can add. Because the Fediverse is decentralised, there is no direct verification system and these symbols carry no meaning.

However, if you are on Mastodon and you own a website, you CAN verify yourself as the site's owner using this tip:
